The Washington Monument is an iconic obelisk located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It was built to honor the first President of the United States, George Washington, and it stands as a symbol of American democracy and the country's founding principles.
Construction of the Washington Monument began in 1848 and was completed in 1884, although there was a pause in construction during the American Civil War. The monument is made of marble, granite, and sandstone, and stands at a height of 555 feet, 5 1/8 inches (169.3 meters), making it the tallest structure in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Monument is open to the public and offers visitors the opportunity to take an elevator to the top of the monument to enjoy sweeping views of the National Mall and the surrounding area. The monument also contains exhibits on the history of the monument and the life and legacy of George Washington.
In recent years, the Washington Monument has undergone renovations to improve its safety and accessibility, including the addition of a new visitor screening facility and an upgraded elevator system.
